Enterprise Ventures provides finance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in England and Wales. We are one of the few funders specialising in meeting the needs of small businesses and one of the few able to provide both venture capital and loans.

Established over 30 years ago, Enterprise Ventures started life as part of a regeneration scheme to help grow Lancashire companies. It is now an independent company, wholly owned by its management team and with a national reputation for helping small businesses to develop and grow.

We manage funds to the value of over £130 million, mainly on behalf of organisations such as the European Community, national and local governments and regeneration bodies. They include The North West Funds for Venture Capital and Mezzanine, Lancashire County Council’s Rosebud Fund and the Coalfields Funds.

Typically these funds are designed to help small companies to access investment and generate economic growth and are offered at favourable terms and rates. We also invest money on behalf of local authority pension funds and some private investors.

We are open to applications from businesses in all sectors and at all stages of development – including early stage technology companies that are not yet generating revenue; other start-ups with genuine commercial prospects; established companies that need funding for growth; those seeking to support management buy-outs and buy-ins; or to provide replacement capital where an existing shareholder wants to realise their investment in the business.

All of the businesses we support are SMEs with a turnover of up to £50 million. However unlike some other funders which focus on companies at the top end of this turnover range, we are equally happy to support true small firms with a turnover of less than £10 million.

What one top tip would you give to a business owner embarking on a growth plan?
Be ambitious. Remember that although the banks may not be lending there are numerous alternative providers of finance out there, so don’t let funding constrain your plans – explore all avenues.
