Boost Q&A: Ross Smith, Rainford Timber

Ross Smith Rainford Timber for Boost website

Ross Smith is the contracts manager at Rainford Timber Co, a firm with many years' experience in timber frame houses, manufacturing and supplying both the construction industry and individual self builders.

The firm received support from Boost's Growth Support Service in May 2022, and was introduced to Boost's Growth Mentoring program. The hub also introduced Rainford Timber to the Lancashire Manufacturing Growth Fund who are providing a grant for website development and to the Lancashire Forum for advice regarding taking on apprentices. Working in a senior role within a business in Lancashire, Ross shares his thoughts with Boost and offers advice for new entrepreneurs.

What support did you receive from Boost and how has it helped you and your business?

Boost helped us secure access to funding for a digital marketing campaign grant, which entails a re-brand of our corporate image, website update and a social media campaign. We expect this to increase our turnover by circa £1m and secure 2 more full time jobs in the workplace, whilst improving brand awareness and strengthening our position within the marketplace.

What piece of advice stood out the most during your Boost support?

The availability of funding that is out there. Until I engaged with Boost, I was unaware of this. We were planning to update the website regardless. The grant has allowed us to invest wisely and do more (re-brand and 12-month social media campaign).

Who has been your biggest business inspiration and why?

It is impossible to name one, there are far too many people that have help me in my career to date. LinkedIn as a platform has played a significant role in this. It has allowed me to network with likeminded individuals, which has sometimes encouraged me to look at things in a different perspective.

What motivates you in business and why?

Client satisfaction – knowing we have done a good job. Integrity means everything. The ultimate goal is ensuring that the business is true to our promises and meets / exceeds our customers expectations.

How do you like to start your working day?

Quick chat with the team and a coffee.

Why is Lancashire a great location for a business?

Our premises are ideally located to service the entire North West.

What would you say to someone who is considering using Boost?

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

What is your advice for anyone looking to grow a business?

Surround yourself by great people, both internally and external. Communicate with your customers and keep them updated, so there are no hidden surprises. In the unlikely event that something does go wrong be transparent – if the situation is dealt with correctly, customers are much more understanding that you may think.

Would you like to see your business grow? So would we. To speak to someone from the Growth Hub about business support, contact Boost online or call 0800 488 0057.
