Boost support story: Henshaw Safety & Training Solutions

Henshaw Training

Boost; Lancashire’s Business Growth Hub has helped more than 8,000 business owners and managers to improve and grow their business, either through one of our core business support programmes or by referring them to funded support available across the county.

Henshaw Safety & Training Solutions is a Lancashire-based family business that specialises in bespoke training and consultancy solutions to ensure compliance with food safety legislation.

The company is led by a mother and son duo with a passion for the food industry and a mission to ensure that all their clients uphold an exceptional standard of food safety within their business operations. Co-founder Marcia Henshaw shares how Boost helped them when they were first starting out.

Why did you contact Boost for support?

We had an idea for the business, but we were unsure how to get started or how to get a foothold in our market. We then googled ‘business support’ and came across Boost. Boost gave us an excellent foundation and direction to get started, plus provided helpful contacts to guide us as the business began to take its first steps.

How did Boost help?

As well as the initial guidance, we were invited to join Boost’s Flying Start Programme as we are a new start up. This included attending online workshops and masterclasses on a range of topics that covered different areas of business. We were also offered legal assistance, web development and other invaluable support. This included regular contact with our Boost business advisor Yusuf Musa. It is very reassuring knowing someone is there to speak to whenever required.

Have you faced any challenges trying to start up your business?

When we first set up the business, we discovered that we were not eligible for any government funding or financial support, this was one of the reasons we contacted Boost. Our business was also affected by the first coronavirus lockdown. When it was announced, we decided to immediately contact our clients, and those that we were hoping to onboard. We then implemented a coronavirus policy, risk assessment and purchased PPE. We reassured all our clients that it would be safe for us to attend sites, or we could work remotely and could still accommodate their requirements, reassuring them we would still be there for them at all times. During the pandemic we worked on a month-by-month basis and fortunately we have managed to maintain an income.

So, how’s business now?

We have expanded our client base from two to ten with a potential to onboard three more clients and are also now looking to recruit a Quality Assurance administrator. We are in the process of developing our trademarked training scheme to offer as an e-commerce product. Our plans are to be able to maintain our current client base to achieve financial sustainability and security.

Why should businesses get in touch with Boost?

Boost offers the support and confidence to help give you and your business the direction needed to have the best possible start.
