Roaming Roosters opened for business three years ago when third generation family butchers and farmers Simon and Nick Mellin started selling sustainably produced chicken and pork reared on the family farm, online.
Demand was so great that they quickly needed to source products from other local farmers who shared their sustainable ethos. Growth continued apace, and before long the brothers were planning to expand by converting farm buildings into a Farm Shop, Bistro and Café. But with speedy growth came the requirement to put in place a structured growth plan.
Growth Manager Wendy Bowers and Growth Coach Paul Gorman worked with Simon and Nick to identify the steps they needed to secure sustainable growth. Critical to this was setting aside time to strategically plan, allowing the ideas brimming in the Mellin’s minds to take shape. Specialist growth coaching sessions helped the group put plans in place to grow and to secure funding to convert farm buildings into bustling premises. Paul also helped Roaming Roosters to develop a robust, credible plan and narrative to present to the bank. As a result, the bank agreed to shift their bridging loan to a commercial loan. This has lifted a huge amount of pressure from the brothers’ shoulders and set the foundations for strong business development.
Since the new premises have opened, staff numbers have grown from two to 29 (against an initial forecast of 14). Tripling forecasts for the year ahead, turnover is expected to leap to £1.2m in 2013. Staying true to their sustainable ideals, in March the company opened of a not-for-profit education centre to teach children about sustainability and where the food on their plate comes from.
