Support tips the scales of success for growing business

Janet Marsden of Weighing Scales Boost Website

A weighing equipment business plans to double its workforce in the next three years and expand its portfolio of services, following support from Boost Business Lancashire’s Growth Mentoring programme.

Nelson-based Weighing Scales sells, services, repairs and calibrates all types of weighing equipment and weights. Its team of qualified engineers offer an ISO9001-accredited service to manufacturing industries, the NHS and universities across the UK.

Following a successful first round of support from Boost which put the business on target for 20 per cent annual growth for the next three years and saw it launch new services including temperature and humidity calibration, Weighing Scales received further help, in particular from mentor Paul Aisthorpe, to drive its current expansion plans.

As a result, the directors John Gannon and Janet Marsden who founded the business 10 years ago, predict the creation of six more jobs by 2019.

This support focused on specific goals surrounding sales strategy, management, development and improving HR policies which has resulted in a stronger, more sales focused team, better individual and team motivation and greater innovation within the business.

Janet said: “Boost Business Lancashire has delivered a fantastic business growth service to Weighing Scales Ltd. The support has been flexible and focuses on our business needs.

“In a fast changing business environment the service has delivered the right support at the right time and does not tangle you up in bureaucratic red tape. I would not hesitate to recommend Boost Business support services to other businesses eager for growth and expansion.”

Boost is the name for the Lancashire Business Growth Hub. It is led by the Lancashire LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) and Lancashire County Council and supported by funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Growth Mentoring is a fully funded programme delivered by Community and Business Partners and Orvia. The overall aim is to accelerate the growth of SMEs to stimulate new investment and job creation by identifying and removing the barriers to their growth.

Jaydee Davis, operations manager at Community and Business Partners, said: “Working with Weighing Scales and witnessing their continued success is rewarding for everyone involved. The considerable focus and emphasis on strategic goals during this phase of the support will contribute towards the business’s future success.”

Boost Business Lancashire has received £3.8m of funding from the England European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020.
