Free support to help businesses grow through product development

Businesses in the North West looking to develop new products are being offered free support from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). The University’s Innovation Clinic is hosting a two-part workshop to equip local firms with the skills to transform their product ideas into best sellers.

The workshops will be fronted by industry experts Martin Jones, Paresh Parmar and Peter Leather, who will share knowledge on areas including what makes a successful product, how to identify demand and how to bring a product to market.

They will also advise on funding and routes to finance, branding and marketing, and the product innovation process. Martin manages the Innovation Clinic and has brought a large number of successful products to market working with companies such as Adidas, Speedo, Next and BT.

Paresh is course leader on UCLan’s fashion brand management course and the owner of a successful web design business, while Peter is responsible for UCLan’s intellectual property and UCLan Ventures, and has more than 20 years’ experience in the commercialisation of technology products.

Iain Martin, Project Manager at UCLan said: “Developing new products, whatever form they take, is an essential part of business success. Customers across all industries are increasingly savvy and want the most efficient and effective up-to-date products.

If businesses don’t innovate they are at risk of being left behind. “However, making a success of a new product is about more than just having a good idea. For a successful launch strategy businesses must be knowledgeable in a number of different areas, from developing a product’s USPs to preparing a funding application. The workshops will focus on all the areas needed for a successful product launch.”

Part one of the event is being held at the University on June 24, with part two taking place on July 1. Both days will run from 9am until 5pm, and attendees should ideally be able to attend both dates. The UCLan Innovation Clinic helps business in Lancashire grow through innovation and product development. It is part of Boost Business Lancashire, the county's £7.2million business growth hub backed by the European Regional Development Fund.
