U Start will deliver more resilient graduate start-up businesses in Lancashire contributing to the local economy, particularly within priority sectors such as advanced manufacturing, low carbon energy, creative and digital, social enterprise and health sector innovation. Furthermore, U Start will increase the number of graduate new business owners engaging in support through Boost.

Beneficiaries of this project will be have pre-existing relationships with ether Lancaster University or the University of Central Lancashire, as enrolled students, staff or recent alumni based within the region.

Beneficiaries will receive relevant support input through two pathways:

  • Enterprise Readiness: Potential entrepreneurs will receive non-financial support to become enterprise ready.  Content focuses on ideas testing, market research, business planning, business formation, etc, with the aim of giving beneficiaries full confidence to register a business as a result.
  • New Business: New business owners will receive non-financial support to de-risk their businesses and prepare them to engage in growth support.  Content focuses on strategic planning, business leadership, securing finance, marketing, etc, with the aim of supporting the resilience of the business owner and the sustainability of the business.

Content will be delivered through a range of media to enable scalability and accessibility, including traditional one-to-many, flipped classroom with facilitated self-access, coaching and mentoring, networking, business simulation experiences, etc.
