Chorley-based Morgan Lighting has successfully transformed its business operations, thanks to help from Boost Business Lancashire’s Growth Mentoring programme.
The business has scaled back its retail arm in order to expand its more profitable service division, which offers professional lighting design and installation to clients.
Founded in 2002, the company is owned and operated by husband and wife team, Peter and Rosemary Morgenroth. Peter is the designer and Rosemary works in customer service and business administration.
Morgan Lighting works with electricians, contractors and businesses, providing electrical services to commercial companies, as well as fire alarms and emergency lighting and maintenance.
Peter said: “Our service business was performing much more strongly than our retail operation and we had started rapidly growing a new B2B service for inspection, testing and maintenance for property owners and management companies.
“We had anticipated the changing market forces so we decided to scale back the retail activities and close the retail shop to enable us to concentrate and rapidly grow the service business.”
Peter found out about the Growth Mentoring programme from a customer who had benefited from the support available. He contacted Orvia directly to find out what support was available to help with the change management process and routes to market.
The project was tailored to enable Morgan Lighting to define its change objectives and identify the actions, marketing strategy and skills needed to grow the new parts of the service business to their full potential.
Peter added: “Our mentor at Orvia, Malcolm Timms, guided us through a number of areas to challenge our perceptions of the market and helped with planning as well as developing our business goals, financial plans and the best routes to market.”
Rosemary has also attended a skills assist workshop on boosting sales, which she found very interesting and useful. She hopes to attend further sessions to address further skills needs. They have additionally been made aware of the Superfast Lancashire programme, which can continue supporting their business development programme.
Ann Holcroft, operations manager at Orvia, commented: “Peter and Rosemary had identified their desire to expand their offering to the B2B sector. Though experienced in design and installation they were hesitant in how to approach property management companies and commercial settings.
“They worked with their mentor Malcolm to develop a strong marketing campaign and one which differentiated their offering. It is great to see Morgan Lighting is moving forward with its expansion plans and that it is able to benefit from the Growth Mentoring programme.”
Boost Business Lancashire is the £7.2m Lancashire Business Growth Hub, offering free and part-funded business support to ambitious and growing businesses. Delivered by Lancashire County Council and the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership, and supported by £3.6m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), it aims to grow Lancashire’s economy by £20m and create at least 1,200 new jobs and safeguard 700 more by 2015.
