From mentee to mentor – My business growth journey

business_men_shaking_hands___web 2

No matter how far you go, there's always more you can do. When I look back over the last 12 years in business, I realise what a great journey it's been. There were lots of major challenges at the beginning.

Perhaps the most challenging was wondering how to pay for fuel or rent. Back in 2002 a good friend supported me for nearly two years while we got the business going. Money was sparse, my days were long but Damian (my business partner who's more like a brother) and I formed a great team. We worked well together and to this day have never had a fall out that I can remember.

Now our business has begun to mature, and I've developed as a business person, it's clear to me that the support of someone outside the business is a key factor in our success. I've actually had several mentors over the years, all with different skills and backgrounds, but all with one similar trait; they have all been very successful in their own right.

I remember thinking when we started on the mentor journey ‘why would anyone decent give up their time, for free, to help us?’. Now we've reached a point where we're successful in our own right, I realise there's much more to business and to life than doing a great job and making money.

So, if you're sceptical about how good growth mentors are. If you've never actually thought a growth mentor might be of use, now's the time to have a rethink. See, I believe wherever you are in life or in business, you can always go further.

You can always be better and you can always learn more. Mentors inspire, they encourage, they support, but most of all, from my perspective; they are there to help you with no hidden agenda, no ego to show off and no axe to grind. Seem bizarre?

Not at all. That's why recently I've become a mentor. The first business I helped was a young entrepreneur who wanted to start a lettings agency. He now has hundreds of properties and is very successful at just 25. It's a great feeling to have been involved.

Take the next step, contact the Boost team and see what's available for you. I believe growth mentoring is the best scheme that's out there to help and support businesses in Lancashire.
