I couldn’t have done it without my mentor

help__support_and_guidance___web 2

On January 2nd 2015 my business will be 13 years old. I’ve always liked the number 13. I was born on the 13th, we lived at 13 Hill Street for many happy years, and now D&M Creative will be 13. More than ever, I’m convinced 2015 will be our year, but I wasn’t born a business person.

My early career started at 16 in the RAF during the time of the first Gulf War. That was followed by running a car valeting business, teaching in a college and then working in fashion marketing. When Damian and I started D&M, I was pretty clueless when it came to most things in business. Accounts, planning, HR and time management were all challenges that seemed insurmountable at the time.

Here’s where I was lucky – I met Amanda Meachin, the now CEO of Community & Business Partners at a networking event. Amanda introduced me to coaching and mentoring and how it could help me grow my business. I’ve had a couple of mentors over the years.

Sometimes I’ve had questions about practical things like accounts and human resources matters, while other times business growth has been the focus. It still amazes me how many high-quality mentors are available through the Boost Business Lancashire service.

For example, Community and Business Partners has in excess of 250 highly successful, knowledgeable and motivated individuals who are willing to give you 12 hours of their time for free.

The mentors have expertise in many different sectors, including construction, manufacturing, professional services, transport, education and so on. Not only does it have sector specialists, it has experts in specific business functions like marketing, accounts and HR. Growth mentoring can elevate your business and make you a better business person. It has done exactly that for me and my business.
