Joanne_Boyd_QA

CJX Business Services is a consultancy firm working with SMEs in Lancashire and Cumbria and a Boost & Co member. Founder Joanne Boyd, who received support from Boost when establishing her business, has since also been a coach on the Boost Bespoke programme as well as a Boost mentor.

She shares her inspirational Lancashire woman in business story.

What does your business do?

CJX Business Services works with SMEs in Lancashire and Cumbria. We deliver bespoke strategic business growth solutions to SMEs by providing strategic business planning services and making the process highly engaging and lively rather than a must have initiative that they have to go through. We also provide client experience and client journey mapping services.

This looks at every interaction and engagement that clients have with a brand and ensures businesses are delivering the best client experience possible. This will result in not only growth and retention but also advocacy and loyalty driving overall growth whilst keeping your costs contained.

Why did you start your own business?

Coming from an entrepreneurial family, I have always wanted to own my own business. When moving to the UK from a 28-year career in the US, I decided it was time to make some critical changes to my life and work balance.

I set up my company just before lockdown and for me it worked out well as I was able to dedicate so much time to leveraging the wonderful fully funded support available in Lancashire, do a ton of online networking and make sure I had a solid business plan in place. For me, I was able to bring global experience across a myriad of sectors to local SMEs in Lancashire and Cumbria.

What has been your biggest business breakthrough?

Being in a position in my career where I can support businesses, through mentoring, coaching or consultancy, at no cost to them. I spend approximately a third of my time in business doing this.

The other two thirds are spent working directly with SME clients in Lancashire and Cumbria. This business model enables both growth and progress for my clients as well as myself and my team. As Benjamin Franklin once stated: "Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement and success have no meaning."

What has been your proudest achievement in your business?

Through the kickstart programme, I hired a young graduate from UCLAN. She was, at that time, working eight hours a week at Primark and she wanted a career where she could leverage her graphic design degree from UCLAN.

She was a very quiet, shy, and quite nervous young lady. During the six months of the programme, she developed her confidence and capabilities so much that I made the decision to hire her as my first employee. She now runs zoom meetings, attends networking events, meets with clients. She is my most important asset and she absolutely loves what she does as a young business professional.

What is the most effective support or guidance you have received?

I was very privileged to be able to access BOOST support when I first started by business venture. It provided excellent support to me in terms of startup support. I was so delighted with what I received and the contacts I made that I became a Boost coach through the Bespoke programme as well as a Boost mentor through the mentoring programme.

What keeps you going when things are tough?

Remaining passionate in all that I do, continuing to be purpose driven and trusting in my own abilities. Also, talking to mentors and peers about some of the challenges that I may be facing, particularly in in those harder skills for example law and finance. They can support and provide advice in areas outside of my core capabilities and skills and ensure the business stays on the clear path to success.

What are your best three tips for maintaining your wellbeing?

  • Focus on your physical health – take regular breaks and exercise frequently. Focus on the things you love and ensure you maintain a healthy work/life balance always.
  • Give back – it is so rewarding to provide pro bono services, whether mentoring, coaching or free services. At CJX Business Services, this is the thrust of our business ethos.
  • Never rush things – be patient with yourself and your team. Prioritise your day and work to that schedule as best you can. If you don’t manage your stress, your stress will manage you.
