A minute with a Boost mentor: Hayley Caine

A minute with a Boost mentor Hayley Caine

Through the fully funded Boost Growth Mentoring programme, business owners and managers can access a wide variety of professional experts to help them develop and grow their business. We highlight some of the mentors working with Lancashire businesses behind the scenes.

So take a break and read about Hayley Caine, a business mentor with an obsession on how people ‘tick’.

Why did you choose to become a mentor?

I didn’t. It chose me, as I got lucky with a great opportunity from someone who took a risk on me. I was trained and mentored by a team of amazing people 21 years ago working on high growth businesses and I was hooked.

It combines my love of helping people develop growth mindsets, reducing the stress of business growth, ideas and innovation to spot market opportunities and being fascinated with profit and numbers.

How do you make a real difference to Lancashire businesses?

Making growth easier, less stressful and faster with people strategies and plans. Every person in your business contributes to every pound of profit. Helping business owners and directors to really know their people and their potential and develop their team to grow the business.

Identifying what is really impacting growth and getting people to solve it.

What is your area of expertise and why is it an important area to for business leaders to address?

  • Strategic planning that is practical and gets results.
  • Adding value to services/products and improving profit – dissecting pricing, profit, customers, markets and products.
  • Analysis of how and why customers buy and how this can be used in your approach.
  • Getting the best from managers and their teams and motivation.
  • Keeping clients on track and accountable for performance.
  • Getting people obsessed with profitability

Plans, people and profit are an important area for business leaders to address. They need to become experts in understanding people, how to adapt their plans and drive change and how to motivate their people to create growth.

What has been your most inspirational moment as a mentor?

There are too many to list but my moments have one thing in common – people's success and their business growth continues to inspire me daily.

What are the key challenges for Lancashire businesses at the moment?

People’s potential not being realised and mindsets and attitude to their careers –  there is a complex combination creating the perfect storm impacting growth:

  • Multi-generational clashes, global shortage of skilled workforce, lack of investment into people and their futures, migrating workforce, education system strategies and culture and the legacy we are inheriting now.
  • Attracting new people, recruitment, development and retention of existing teams. The whole workforce at every level has a different mindset to growth since worldwide events impacted. Leaders are not adapting quickly enough and it has to start from the top.

As a mentor, what are your three business growth tips?

  1. Reflect and review daily so you can adapt more quickly.
  2. Trust and respect your people –  invest in them and help them to build their families' futures and not just yours.
  3. Get everyone at every level to love and be fascinated with profit and agree on how to share it.
